jan 1, 59 BC - End of Republic

Description:

Significance of event: The end of the Republic fell from a war within not from any outside invasions. The fall led us to what we know today as the Roman Empire.

Summary: Three major things happened that led to the fall of the Republic allies wanting citizenship, the First Triumvirate, and the battle between the leading men of the First Triumvirate. Many allies had been helping the Republic by paying tribute and giving them soldiers all they wanted was citizenship. A rebellion happened and finally all people were given citizenship. Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompey, and Marcus Licinius Crassus banned together and created the First Triumvirate where they controlled the consulships and military commands for about 10 years. After that Caesar left the consul in 59 BCE he took his army to Gaul and Germania. Gnaeus was the governor of Spain after the First Triumvirate and Marcus was trying to become famous in the east but was killed in at the Battle of Carrhae. Pompey became jealous of the success that Caesar had gained (even though Caesar just wanted to be in politics). Pompey and Caesar went to battle at Pharsalus in 48 BCE. Pompey was killed when he escaped to Egypt by Ptolemy XIII. Caesar went on to conquer eastern provinces and northern Africa. Many people felt that his new position (dictator) was not good for the Republic and was killed on the Ides of March (44 BCE). After Caesar died his son Octavian became first emperor of Rome as Augustus. After that the Republic fell.
