With the help of a wealthy friend by the name of Martin Harris, Smith moved to Oakland, PA, and began the process of transcribing his plates. After a year of dictation, Harris brought the manuscript to Palmyra to show his friends and family. During this trip, he lost the book. Because of this, Joseph Smith claimed that an angel punished him by taking away his plates before anyone could see and authenticate them. By 1830, however, Smith finished the Book of Mormon.
