In 1823, a young Joseph Smith claims to have a vision. In this vision, an angel named Moroni reveals the location of a book made of golden plates. Unable to show the plates to anyone, Smith had no luck starting his religion. Because of this, he turned to spiritualism. He used ‘seeing stones’ to find lost items for desperate people. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very good a it, and was brought before the Chenango County Court and was tried. While the outcome of this trial is unknown, it is known that Smith was arrested for fraud between 30 and 42 times. In 1827 it is said that he successfully retrieved the plates, but an angel told him not to show them to anyone.
