States began seceding after the Election of Abraham Lincoln, even before he was inaugurated. South Carolina the states farthest south, where slavery and agriculture formed the Confederate States of America with Jefferson Davis as President. They established their capital at Montgomery, Alabama and took over federal forts on their territory. They also wrote a constitution that was adopted on March 11, 1861.
