Saladin attacked Rama and Lyddon (Frank townships) on route to Jerusalem and he bet on the Franks cowering in Ascelion - this was a miscalculation. He clashed with the Christian Franks army at the Battle of Mountgisard and had to flee with his army after the king’s templars, who had recently come to support Baldwin in Jerusalem, overpowered Saladin’s force - they were the elite fighting force of the crusade, after all
