jul 13, 1915 - Matching Fossils Found Across Oceans
Description:
Alfred Wegener discovered the distribution of duplicate fossils and living species across continents. Given that these plants and animals couldn’t have just walked across the ocean or been spread by wind across thousands of miles, he proposed the theory that at one point in history the continents were one. However this idea could not be confirmed until the 1960’s, 30 years after Wegener’s death, when scientists mapped the entire ocean floor for the first time and saw how it was divided into different sections that could all move independently––tectonic plates.
