oct 22, 1795 - Cuvier is Top Expert on Animal Anatomy
Description:
George Cuvier became the top expert on animal anatomy in the world after becoming a member of the natural museum of Paris. He used his vast knowledge to help identify fossil remains as well as to reconstruct the bodies of extinct animals who had previously been unguessable in shape. Many of the fossils Cuvier studied were located around Paris. He identified them as an elephant at first, but on comparison he saw that there was a significant difference in size between elephant and this new fossil though they appeared to be from similar species. Cuvier decided that it was impossible for such a creature to still be alive and roaming the earth, for something so big would certainly have been discovered by then. So using the Darwin theory that in order to survive changing climate and habitats a species must evolve, he declared that such must have not happened for the new animal, thus they died out.
