During Abd al-Rahman reign, he gave most of the power to Arab Umayyads, enforced Islam as the official religion and they began construction on the Great Mosque of Cordoba. This mosque would become architectural centerpiece of the capital, and kingdom. The mosque has a prayer hall and high ceilings, supported by columns.
