That same year, William Harper Rainey, using Chautauqua University’s model, offered college-level correspondence courses at the University of Chicago (Scott, 1999). The correspondence division at the University of Chicago was quite successful in terms of enrollment, enrolling 3,000 students in 350 courses with 125
instructors (Rumble, 1986).
