dec 26, 1776 - Battle of Trenton

Description:

American morale was low. The Continental Army had just come out of one of the worst winters at Valley Forge. However, George Washington had a plan. The British army had halted their movements for the winter and hunkered down. A garrison of Hessians under Colonel Johann Rall were encamped at Trenton. George Washington devised a surprise attack on the morning after Christmas. On Christmas night George Washington's men crossed the icy Delaware River. They arrived in Trenton on the morning of December 26. They found the hessians sleeping off their big Christmas dinners. After short skirmishes the Hessians surrendered. The Americans had only lost 2 to the Hessian 20. The Hessian also had 100 wounded and 1,000 captured. This was a huge victory for the Americans it boosted their morale and proved that they could defeat the better equipped and supplied enemy.
