On July 4 1776 the second continental congress in Philadelphia signed the Declaration of Independence. The document stated that the 13 colonies were now a separate country from Great Britain. This changed a lot. It gave inspiration to the soldiers fighting for independence, and it sent a shock wave through the world. The American colonies became the first Europian colonies in the world to break from their mother country.
