jan 1, 1791 - Whiskey Rebellion
Description:
The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest in 1971 and ending in 1974. The tax was intended to generate revenue for the war debt incurred during the Revolutionary War. The tax applied to all distilled spirits, but American whiskey was by far the country's most popular distilled beverage in the 18th century. More than 500 armed men attacked a fortified home of a tax inspector named General John Neville. George Washington sent 13,000 militiamen to stop the rebellion but all the rebels left before the army got there proving the government was serious about suppressing violent resistance.
