During the famous Midnight Run, Paul Revere traveled around the colonies on his horse, Nelly, shouting "The British are coming!" The colonist men called militiamen set up Lexington and prepared for the British. The seventy militiamen and seven-hundred redcoats faced each other off until an unknown person fired and in a couple minutes, eight militiamen were killed and they were forced to retreat. The unknown shot is referred to as the "shot heard 'round the world." The British traveled to Concord and there, the colonists won the battle and the British traveled back to Boston. The Battle of Lexington and Concord is considered the first battles of what soon became the Revolutionary War.
