Ye Ye passed away. Yen is taken out of school only to attend his funeral, where only she cries while her family looks on, stoic. Niang tells her that she gets uglier the older she gets, and will need to leave school soon to get a job. At fourteen, Yen falls into a depression, avoiding her friends at dinner, and trying to figure out how she is going to make it without what she loves, school.
