When the Townshend act was passed, the British began taxing the goods that they sent over to America - including the tea. This caused America to start growing/making their own goods. Because the British were taxing the tea, the rest of the American's got angry with Britain (so not only the elites were angry with Britain anymore), resulting in the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Because the American's angered the British with their mini rebellion, they punished the Americans through the Coercive/Intolerable Acts. Due to the fact that the American's felt their rights were being imposed on, they created a Bill of Rights to ensure their rights in the Constitution.
