jan 1, 1300 - Ars Nova
Description:
The addition of more note values led to more complex rhythms giving music more clarity and making music rules more specific and easier to follow. Accidentals, time signatures, and key signatures also expanded music notation making reading and composition as well as notation rules easier to follow. During this time, music began to be seen as unified works rather than separate compositions pieced together.
-You can now have any accidental other than B flat.
- time signatures measured rhythm
- mensural notation was measured notation indicating rhythm and pitch
- key signatures specified the pitches in a composition
Jehan Des Murs' goal was to more precisely measure and reform the entire music notation system and to eliminate the old system.
Philippe de Vitry explained mensural notation.
