jan 1, 1909 - Gold foil experiment
Description:
Rutherford passed a stream of alpha particles through a very thin gold foil. Based on the plum pudding model, it was espected that all the positive alpha particles would be affected in the same way, but some partiv=cles were deflected. this was because there were positive particles in the atom that only affected some of the particles. using math and the percentage of particles that were deflected, rutherford could calculate that atoms were mostly open space
