VHS was invented in 1976 by Victor Company of Japan (JVC). VHS stands for Video Home System. A VHS was a tape player that could play VHS cassettes. The VHS cassettes held videos, movies and music. Although the VHS was popular when it was first introduced it hit the peak of its popularity in the 80s and 90s. The VHS had better characteristics such as more storage, smaller, easier and it lasted longer unlike others like it such as the Betamax. However the sales of the VHS slowly declined towards the end of the 90s as DVD were introduced.

VHS was a very significant invention to the development of TV and film. VHS provided better storage and it was more affordable compared to similar products and therefore many people used it. It was essentially the most common way to watch films and so was very popular. It aided in the increasing popularity of TV and film.
