jan 1, 1798 - Republican Party
Description:
Around this time, the Anti-Federalist Party was renamed the Republican Party. They were in support of individual states' rights and a more literal interpretation and enactment of the Constitution. At around this same time, the Federalists attempted to rename the Republican party the Democratic-Republican Party in reference to the French Revolution. The Democratic-Republican Party members didn't mind this though, as they admired the democracy-aimed ideals of the French.
