Thomson experimented with a thing called a Crookes tube while studying the passage of an electric current going through a gas which led to his discovery of light negative particles called electrons. This then shut down Daltons theory of atoms being indivisible. These experiments also eventually led the discovery of a very heavy positive particle later called a proton. Thomson proposed that electrons have a smaller mass and a negative charge, an atom is a sphere of positive electricity, and that negative electrons are embedded in the positive sphere which makes the atom uncharged.
