jan 1, 1904 - J.J Thomson's Model of the Atom

Description:

Thomson experimented with a thing called a Crookes tube while studying the passage of an electric current going through a gas which led to his discovery of light negative particles called electrons. This then shut down Daltons theory of atoms being indivisible. These experiments also eventually led the discovery of a very heavy positive particle later called a proton. Thomson proposed that electrons have a smaller mass and a negative charge, an atom is a sphere of positive electricity, and that negative electrons are embedded in the positive sphere which makes the atom uncharged. This theory is now called the "raisin bun" or "plum pudding" model. This theory was proven incorrect by Rutherford
