In fear of an unwanted alliance with France the Alien and Sedition acts were passed to protect the United States from involvement with the French. These acts allowed deportation of certain individuals providing a threat to the country as well as limiting freedom of speech and press by threatening deportation to those criticising President Adams of The United States.
