apr 17, 1521 - Diet of Worms
Description:
In 1520, Pope Leo X declared 41 of Luther's 95 theses to be heretical and subsequently excommunicated him. Charles V had the authority to arrest and execute Luther, but Frederick III of Saxony called for an imperial diet to be held at Worms instead. When asked to recant for his beliefs, Luther told the council that there was nothing in the scripture that contradicted him. Although he thus had a warrant placed for his arrest and his works were banned, Luther kept writing anonymously, and the Reformation continued with a great strength.
