Description:
On May 4th, college students had proven evidence that they would protest over the terms Versailles Treaty, which they thought would give up the German territories through China to Japan other than returning them to China after World War I. These examples of the new phase of national alertness in China, and the term "May 4th Movement" came to show the spirit of allegiance among the youths. Through modern Chinese history, the term "May 4th Period" disclose the era of an intense intellectual debate which concerned the roles of traditional Chinese culture, modern science, and Western-style democracy.
