Description:

A large number of Chinese came to America in 1849. The Chinese immigrants often settled in California and states west of the Rocky Mountains. The Chinese immigrants left China because of economic and political troubles. Many young men left their villages to become laborers in the American West. Their goal was to make a lot of money and then return to their families and villages as wealthy men. They wanted to come to America because the Gold Rush at the time and also there was a need for labor. There goal was to make a lot of money and America seemed like the place to do it. They were wanted to extract metals and minerals, construct a vast railroad network, reclaim swamplands, build irrigation systems, work as migrant agricultural laborers, develop the fishing industry, and operate highly-competitive manufacturing industries. The Chinese were considered racially and culturally inferior. The Americans felt that the Chinese were too different to fit into American culture. They lived in segregated ghettos called Chinatowns. They were deprived of democratic rights and fought for their rights.
