sep 2, 1901 - The Simla Education Conference

Description:

It was the first educational conference in India.
President of the conference was Lord Curzon himself. Provincial Directors of Public Instruction, Christian Missionaries representatives, Vice Chancellors of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras universities, Inspector-General of Education in the Central Provinces, Principals from Pune and Madras, Risley as well as some educationists attended the conference.
It was both official and private. There were almost no Indian representatives

It was held for 16 days and covered all the problems in education right from Primary to University education. In total 150 resolutions came as the output approved by 20 people attending the conference. Conference proceedings were never published and hence received a lot of mockery and criticism (like being call names: Secret Conclave or Star Chamber).

Out of 150, more than 45 resolutions were aimed at university education. Appointment of Director-General was proposed Government involvement and control was encouraged in all the structures and functions of the educational institutions- curriculum, affiliations, fees, degrees, exams etc. These resolutions were the foundation for Education Policy declared in 1904.Government schools were encouraged for complete control and increase in the revenue for education
