mar 11, 1995 - DVD

Description:

In 1994 two disk formats were in consideration. One being the Multimedia CD by Sony and Phillips and the other being the Super Density disk by Toshiba and Time Warner. However in 1995 Sony Corporation, Panasonic, Toshiba and Phillips all agreed on one format, this being the DVD. The DVD combined elements from both ideas and later on in 1996 the first DVD player was released in Japan.

The DVD worked by a laser being able to read digitised data that was encoded onto the disk in the form of tiny pits tracing a spiral track between the centre of the disc and its outer edge. DVDs are able to have two sides of data.

The invention of the DVD and player was a big development in TV and film. Soon after they were released they became the most common way to watch films at home and quickly replaced videotapes. The DVD held a much higher quality than previous methods and so customers appreciated them more.
