apr 8, 1953 - Truman's executive order ruled unconstitutional

Description:

In 1953 former president Truman passed an executive order that was nationalized and took control of major steel mills in the US. It allowed them to be under the control and seized by the US Government as production was down because the mill workers were striking for better working conditions. The owners of these big steel mill companies went to court and sued the united states for seizing their property unfairly, they lost and repealed their case and were chosen by the supreme court. This is and example of how the judicial branch checking the executive branch. The Supreme court ruled that all though the US needed the steel, the executive branch had no constitutional right to take the steel owners property. This shows how checks and balances work and how they defend US citizens against the government abusing their powers.
