Napoleon invades Portugal in 1807 causing the royal court to flee to Lisbon. In 1821, the king returns to Portugal from Brazil but leaves his son Pedro there as regent. The next year Brazilian creoles call for independence from Portugal and Pedro agrees to their demands. When the Portuguese Cortes (Parliament) tried to curtail his power, Pedro declared Brazil independent from Portugal and accepted appointment as Emperor Pedro 1Independence as a monarchy
