jan 1, 1863 - Emansiplation procllomation
Description:
In 1863 former president Lincoln passed the Emancipation proclamation as an executive order. The proclamation Freed African Americans from slavery, stating that it all people that are currently slaves in the united sates are now free. This use of an executive order from the executive branch check the legislative branch, which passed laws like the ⅗ compromise recognizing a slave as ⅗ of a person and in laws they stated slaves as property. This is an example of how checks and balances work in America. They allowed the executive branch to change the laws the legislative branch put in place to perpetuate slavery because it went against African Americans right to have equal protection of the law under the 14th amendment.
