The Roman Republic became an empire during the reign of Augustus Cesaer. It had one of the most socially advanced societies of its time, and was so large that is was split into the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire. The Pax Romana occurred during the Roman empire, bring peace and stability to Rome. It ended in 476 CE when Germanic peoples invaded from the north and sacked the Western Roman Empire.
