aug 29, 1817 - First Steamboat Journey
Description:
In the year 1817, seventeen steamboats rode through the Western Rivers. This event became the first significant upriver steamboat journey. These boats were a large part of the economy of the Mississippi Valley during that time. They were carrying cotton across the nation, which was a great contributor to its production. These seventeen steamboats were the root of millions of dollars in both the capital investments and shipping of cotton, over many years after this initial journey. Because of this happening in 1817, cotton was able to obtain such a high value, and an even higher demand. Cotton became a very big industry in the Americas during the Early Modern times, and this steamboat journey was a big contributor to cotton's success. Even though this in not an edible material good like most other focuses, cotton still has an importance to it, and it should still be something we value.
