nov 30, 1952 - First 3D Film
Description:
Although 'Bwana Devil' was not actually the first 3D film t was the first feature-length 3D film in colour and the first 3D sound feature in English. It was a critical disaster but a commercial success.
In 1951 film attendance had fallen dramatically and this was probably due television. Something had to done to fix this. M. L. Gunzberg. Gunzberg and his brother Julian created the process of filming the film in Natural Vision. Natural Vision was a process of recording two films with lens that polarise light at different angles. The lens on the glasses, worn by audiences, are similarly polarised so each admits a corresponding view and blocks the other.
This was a significant invention as it made filming in 3D much easier. Before it was a bulky and expensive three-projector system but Natural Vision made it much more practical.
