oct 6, 1927 - First Film with Sound

Description:

The 6th October 1927 marked a historic landmark for film and TV. On this day the first film with dialogue (sound) was released. Although 'The Jazz Singer only had a little over 350 words it was a huge success and changed the movie world forever.

This talkie film was a Warner Bros Production and to make it possible in 1926 they invested half a million dollars on Western Electric in the Vitaphone sound system. Inventors then discovered that sound information could be recorded on a small strip of celluloid that ran down one side of a strip of film. Although it didn't always work, for example a scene in the film 'Singing in the Rain' was out of sync, this new found way to record sound was a big step in the history of film and TV.

'The Jazz Singer' was a major event that significantly helped the development of TV and film. It allowed other filmmakers to experiment with sound and dialogue in their films and started the movement for sound in TV and film. Now every film has sound.
