The theory that a specific microbe causes a specific disease. Disproved spontaneous generation. Building on Louis Pasteur's ideas, Robert Koch created the scientific requirements used to prove this theory. Other people who helped contribute to this theory are Leeuwenhoek, Semmelweis, Lister, and Fleming.
