sep 2, 1989 - Jesmyn Ward attends private school
Description:
At age 12, Jesmyn was given the opportunity to attend a private Episcopalian school, paid for by a rich lawyer who employed Ward's mother as a maid. Jesymn was very shy and had been bullied by her classmates when she attended the local all-black public school. At her private school, Jesmyn was the only black person in her grade. She was again bullied by her classmates but for a different reasons. Ward was subjected to racial taunting and always felt like an outsider; however, this motivated her to work hard in order to escape her small town and go to college. Going to private school was an unpleasant experience for Ward, but it provided her an opportunity that many of her African American peers did not have.
