In 1630 over a thousand Puritans left England on 11 different ships. They landed in Salem, Massachusetts. At the end of the 1630s nearly 14,00 more Puritans came to Massachusetts. The colony began to spread and eventually absorbed Plymouth. The Puritans emigrated from England because the Stuarts were ruling England at the time and they were Catholic sympathizers. The Puritans were very protestant and did not agree with the Stuarts and feared that they would convert England, Catholic. They immigrated to the New World to be “A model of Christian Charity’ and set an example for Europe. They also wanted to create their own form of government, a theocracy, and make their own rules. The life expectancy of the Puritans were a lot longer than that of England and much longer than the southern English colony colony. Children were also born at a faster rate. Literacy rates were high as well because the Puritans wanted their children to be able to read the Bible. The Puritans believed in doing God's work so there was little room for compromise.The Puritans felt no remorse about administering punishment, and they believed in Old Testament method. But, the Puritans did have fun, there were celebrations and festivals, people saying and told stories, and children were allowed to play games with their parents’ permission. The most important rule was to follow God's law.
