feb 19, 1602 - Jamestown

Description:

The Jamestown settlers came from England. There were 144 men and boy that settled in Jamestown in 1607. They landed in Virginia.
The people emigrated from England because there was overpopulation due to more efficient farming techniques. Also a joint-stock company invested in the settlement and they needed workers who were motivated and adventurous. There were too many poor people living on the streets of London. The reason why people came to America is because they wanted to become rich and own more land. The poor people that came over to Jamestown wanted to not be hungry anymore and money. They also came with the hope of new opportunity to increase in social status and have more economic opportunities. In the first winter they had a starving time. The reason they were starving was because they were told if they did not generate any wealth by finding gold they would not have financial support from the joint stock company. Many of the men spent their days searching for gold instead of farming and cultivating the land. As a result, food supplies dwindled and malaria and the harsh winter begin to cause the death of many of the colonists. After the first year only 38 of the 144 had survived. Even though disease and hunger ravaged Jamestown colonists still arrive and their numbers included women. Despite the introduction of tobacco cultivation the Colony was a failure as a financial investment. the king of England declare the Virginia Company bankrupt in 1624. Virginia became a royal colony, the first in America to be ruled by the Crown.
