jan 2, 1911 - Ernest Rutherford
Description:
Rutherford was building on Thomson'd idea when he discovered the nucleus of the atom. Rutherford took gold foil and started shooting alpha particles at it. After he tested the radioactivity to see if the particles went through the foil, were trapped in the foil, or bounced back off the foil. After noticing some particles went through and some bounced off he made the discovery of the nucleus. Rutherford had four main idea of the nucleus, these were:
1-The nucleus is a small, dense particle that is positively charged core of an atom.
2-All the protons are contained with in the nucleus.
3-All around the nucleus is mostly empty space.
4-Fast moving electrons are erratically spaced along the outside of the atom forming what they call an electron cloud.
