oct 6, 1967 - IMAX

Description:

IMAX corporation was founded in 1967. It is the leader of the giant screen large format film entertainment. It was also the leader of high-end rides and attractions. It all started with a small group of filmmakers including Graeme Ferguson, Robert Kerr, Bill Shaw and Roman Kroitor who took part in a competition to create the first truly large-screen film experience. This lead to them creating a multi-screen film installation at EXPO ‘67 in Montreal. The filmmakers achieved this by syncing 9 projectors together. This was difficult but lead the filmmakers to create the company, IMAX.

Over the next 3 years the team created IMAX technology. The camera, projector and domed screen system was first shown at the Fuji Pavilion at EXPO '70 in Osaka, Japan. IMAX soon expanded further, with the invention of new technology including the IMAX Dome and IMAX 3D and in 1994 IMAX went public and tried to feature Hollywood films. To try and make Hollywood films into a IMAX Blockbuster a new technology called DMR was invented which allowed IMAX to work with Hollywood flims. The first Hollywood film to be used in IMAX was Apollo 13 which was a huge success.

IMAX has been significant to the development of film and TV as it allowed audiences to view films in a different way and made watching films way more exciting and impressive. It increased the amount of views a film had and heightened the success.
