Description:
Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first heart transplant in Cape Town. It was done at Groote Schuur hospital.Dr Barnard took a healthy heart from a young woman, who had died in a car crash, and put it in a man who was dying from heart failure. He did not know if it was going to work, but he did the transplant.
The transplant was a success, but 18 days later the man, who received the heart, died of a lung infection.
