apr 17, 1863 - Freedmen's Colonies

Description:

The first Freedman's Colony is established in Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. Throughout and after the War between the States more "Negro Territories" and Freedman's Colonies would be established across the deep south.

The two terms are used to distinguish the different levels of autonomy held by the region. Negro Territories acted as traditional US territories, except segregated; while Freedman's Colonies behaved more akin to Native American Reservations, or the South African Bantustans of OTL.
