jun 9, 1948 - The Welfare State

Description:

During World War II, there was an increased labor shortage which resulted in many people without healthcare. These welfare programs were originally established by private institutions. After the war, Britain became known as a “Welfare State” in that the government provided a welfare system to support everyone instead of it being provided by private institutions. The people voted to have government involved in the affairs of the. Even when the war ended, there was a large population of poor people in Britain. Unbeknownst to many people, this population was not poor because of ignorance but more so for the socio-economic crisis that erupted post-war. The Welfare State did not just consist of healthcare but rather various acts that were passed to assist families, education for children, and disability for workers: The Family Allowances Act, The 1944 Education Act, and The Industrial Injuries Act of 1946. Today, Britain still maintains a “Welfare State” even though it has adapted to meet the current needs of society: Tax cuts and lower spending. This is reflected in literature because as WWII ended the labor shortage in Britain meant that many jobs were open so this resulted in people migrating and immigrating to Europe in search of work. People celebrated the war but simultaneously experienced the aftermath of poverty.
