Empodocles proposed that matter was made of four elements Earth, wind, fire, and water. His theory may have been influenced by his beliefs in the greek gods. Zeus, representing fire, Hera, representing air, Aidoneus, representing Earth, and Nestis, representing water. Also many beliefs in ancient Greek were based on mythology. This theory is now known to be incorrect because it is now known that the states of matter, liquid, gas, and solid, are due to the behavior of the atoms that they are made up of.
