feb 25, 1917 - Petrograd Strikes

Description:

The general strike spreads through Petrograd, where strikers raised support and gathered in the city centre. The police could not stop the crowds, so Alexandra urged Nicholas to do something to contain the strikes. Nicholas ordered the new military chief, General Khabalov, to authorize troops firing on crowds. This resulted in dozens of deaths.

Demonstrations for bread turned into the goal to overthrow the government.
Regiments that were involved in shooting supported the demonstrators; an estimation of 75000 troops actively supported the revolution. Armed crowds broke into brisons, barracks, arsenals and burned down police stations. Government buildings and The Winter Palace was seized.
