may 8, 1945 - VE Day Celebration

Description:

Victory in Europe Day was a day of celebration not just for Europe but for the whole world. It took place on May 8th, 1945. It was the day World War II ended. It was the day when Germany had surrendered. Adolf Hitler had committed suicide a week earlier which lead Germany defenseless against the allied forces. The cultural development for this was to celebrate the end of the war and all the miseries that had come from it. Millions of lives were lost within the six years of this war and now it was all over. This was the day of celebration. There were about 50,000 people inside the Piccadilly Circus with flags in their hands. It was declared a national holiday with lots of singing and dancing. Prime Minister Winston Churchill, around 3pm, announced on television that the war was over. The King also spoke to the people giving tribute to those who lost their lives. It was a day of remembrance for the people who were gone.
