oct 19, 1999 - DIGITAL CINEMA

Description:

The first film that was digitally projected in the cinema was Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace, on June 3rd 1999.

The death of film format; technicolour shut down its final film lab, Kodak went bankrupt in 2012 and Fujifilm no longer made film for motion pictures.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) became the first major movie to be delivered to cinemas in digital format only. Digital format costs 90% less to produce and ship to U.S cinemas compared to film. Another disadvantage of using film is that it takes a long time to print and degrades as it is used, consequently affecting the viewing quality.
Directors such as Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson still use 70mm film when shooting; it is argued that film creates a nostalgic feel to movies, and should be kept alove for as long as possible.

Modern films shot on film:
- Dunkirk
- I, Tonya
- Baby Driver
- Call Me By Your Name
