sep 13, 1814 - Fort McHenry
Description:
After burning much of Washington down, the British army proceeded up the bay toward Baltimore, where the harbor was guarded by Fort McHenry. Before the British arrived, the American garrison had sunk several ships to clog the entry to the harbor, thus forcing the British to bombard the fort from a distance. As the sun rose and the battle finally came to an end, Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner" upon seeing the American flag raised over the fort, signifying their victory over the British.
