On September 11th, 2001, 4 airplane flights were hijacked by Al-Qaeda, an organization founded in 1988, consisting of Islamic extremists. Osama bin Laden orchestrated the attack, killing 2,996 people in the US. The most well-known attack was at the former World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the attack.
