jun 22, 1807 - Chesapeake- Leopard Affair

Description:

Many British deserters had joined the American merchant marine and navy. Britain passed a law that allowed them to impress these ships and take back their citizens. They ended up often taking Americans. In June, Brits on the Leopard attempted to board the Chesapeake. When they were rejected they opened fire and forced the Chesapeake to surrender. They captured 4, hanged 1, and returned the other 3 because of American pressure.
