Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who led the first Spanish and European expedition deep into the territory of the modern-day United States. He is the first European documented as having crossed the Mississippi River. His first voyage was to Central and South America in 1530 with Francisco Pizarro conquering the Incas. His later voyages focused on what is now Florida and Georgia of the United States.
